Since the beginning of time vinyl and college radio have gone together like mac & cheese. Because of this we here at WERW feel is really important to take part spread the word and encourage others to celebrate Record Store Day.
Record Store Day taking place this Saturday, April 16th, was conceived in 2007 at a gathering of independent record store owners and employees as a way to celebrate and spread the word about the unique culture surrounding nearly 1400 independently owned record stores in the US and thousands of similar stores internationally. The first Record Store Day took place on April 19, 2008. Today there are Record Store Day participating stores on every continent except Antarctica.
Each year there is a new list of limited releases vinyl collectors are eager to purchase. For a full list of this year's releases and a nice shopping list click here.
WERW's RECORD STORE DAY PROGRAMMING:
On Saturday we have a lot of special programming going. In the Morning as a part of the College Radio Day associated Vinylathon we will be playing a straight hour of vinyl from 10am - 11am. Throughout the day DJs are encouraged to play as much vinyl as possible and to tell their friends to get out there and purchase that plastic!
From 2pm onward the station will be at Funk and Waffles on the Hill participating in the Record Store Day Indie Label Meet Up. The event will feature all the local upstate record labels and all the vinyl they have to offer. Tapes will also be celebrated and the first 100 in the door will be getting a free Indie Label tape compilation. There will be vinyl listening stations, discounted music and merch, and lots of free stuff! Participating labels include the student run Marshall Street Records, Professor Oesterle's Aux Records, and other favorites like L.R.S. Records, Betty Elm Records, Hex Records, student- run Ghoul Tapes, and Spit Fam Tapes. WERW will have at table with chances to win some merch and giveaways!
Come celebrate with us!
